haha thats the 1st thing I thought of when I heard Topps was doing this. I do think the Topps looks better though.
While Panini made the first solid gold cards, Donruss printed cards on precious metals back in the 90s. Those cards only contained a gram of the precious metal in question though. Still worth noting though.
Even further proves the point, Donruss and Panini are the same entity.
